Ontario is Canada’s most populous province, with roughly 40% of the country’s population at approximately 13,550,900 and has a total area of 1,076,395 square kilometers.
Established in 1992, the Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association (OSARVA), is the governing body for Volunteer Search & Rescue teams within the province of Ontario and the liaison between the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), National Search and Rescue Secretariat (NSS), Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) and the volunteer SAR teams.
OSARVA is a registered not-for-profit organization comprised of ten board members that represent the volunteer SAR teams within each of the OPP designated regions for Ontario. OSARVA is also responsible for the instruction and certification of the “Basic Searcher” status as initiated and mandated by the OPP. Current strength is 17 teams with over 800 volunteers across the province.

OSARVA groups are active participants in the AdventureSmart program, designed to educate people about being prepared for their outdoor adventures.
SAR VOLUNTEERS – People of the community who bring their talents together to form teams across the province to assist the Police in their efforts to find someone who is lost or injured and bring the victim to safety.
OUR PURPOSE – To assist the Police with trained volunteer ground SAR personnel with the ultimate goal of saving lives. To raise funds for the training of its members and purchase of equipment used for SAR operations.
