Search and Rescue began on Prince Edward Island in 1995 with the establishment of a search and rescue team in West Prince, P.E.I.. The team was created in response to a missing person’s case when trained searchers had to be brought in from out of province. Cst. Terry Totten (RCMP) led the establishment and training of this first team.
Soon after, teams were founded in Charlottetown and in Kings County.
In 2008, Island teams were amalgamated to form Prince Edward Island Ground Search and Rescue (PEIGSAR) based in Charlottetown.
Today, we have approximately 100 active members trained to look for lost and injured persons on land, along our coastline and in our inland waterways.
