Communications Officer

Work Profile

 The Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC) is looking for a motivated, ambitious and reliable individual to become their new Communication Officer. While in this role, the successful candidate will be required to develop, edit and provide timely, current and targeted website and social media communication documents and plans for AdventureSmart, to increase its program profile both internally and externally and to assist in providing public relations support to program key partners.

Core Activities

  • Prepare and manage project communication plans.
  • Determine current and evolving communications, identify audiences and their communications needs and research to identify media portals to deliver communications messaging.
  • Prepare and review promotional material, news releases, website content, social media post and briefing material to convey SAR prevention messaging.
  • Participate in the development of national partnerships with outside organizations/companies.
  • Participate in project teams to develop, implement and manage communication requirements.
  • Provide a regular analysis and reports of information needs, new approaches and/or requirements.

Nature of Work/Responsibility

This job involves developing communication products with the goal to promote SAR prevention and the AdventureSmart program. The successful candidate would be required to develop, plan, implement, evaluate and translate communication products for use by program partners, media outlets, social media platforms and to disseminate to program partners.

Environment

SARVAC’s head office is located at 24 McNamara Drive, Paradise, NL and work is normally carried out in an office setting (work from home may be considered) for 37.5 hours a week. However, there are times the candidate may be required to travel, handle increased work load and deal with fluctuating work schedule due to special events.

Qualifications

A successful candidate must be meet a level B qualification in both official languages for written comprehension, written expression and oral proficiency. This position does require the candidate the have a knowledge and understanding of the organization and programs we deliver. This information will be provided upon and during the first few weeks of starting in the position.

The candidate would be required to be able to properly utilize software and programs to create and develop such communication pieces such as Microsoft Suite G-Suite and Adobe to name a few. Also being able to access and manage social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter) is a must.

The ideal candidate would hold a degree or diploma in business, marketing, communications, journalism, public relations, or a related discipline.

The Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC) is a registered not-for-profit and educational organization that supports, coordinates, develops, informs, promotes and implements search, rescue and emergency response with the underlying principle of saving lives. SARVAC is administered by volunteers who train and practice search, rescue and survival skills in various parts of Canada. SARVAC provides a medium for liaison and the exchange of information among federal, provincial/territorial, local, and volunteer search and/or rescue agencies and organizations.

About AdventureSmart

AdventureSmart and its suite of five programs, is a national prevention program focused on reaching Canadians, and visitors to Canada, who participate in outdoor recreational activities.

AdventureSmart combines online and on-site awareness with targeted outreach in order to reduce the number and severity of Search and Rescue Incidents in Canada.

In order to provide the largest possible number of Canadians and visitors to Canada with consistent and relevant safety information, and to ensure that opportunities to engage the public are maximized, AdventureSmart and its partners take a broad, encompassing approach to the delivery of adaptable safety information in-person and online.

Through the collaborative efforts of our various partners, regional coordinators, and volunteers, AdventureSmart is dedicated to encouraging participants to “Get informed and go outdoors”.

Salary

Up to $60,000 per year.

Term

This position holds a three-year term ending March 31, 2024. However, there is the potential for this position to turn into a permanent position.
